Monkeys in Phuket: Where to Meet Them and How to Behave Around Them

Phuket is one of the few islands where wild monkeys have easily adapted to life next to humans. Many travelers dream of seeing these animals, feeding them and taking bright photos. However, it is important to remember that macaques are wild creatures, and interaction with them requires compliance with safety rules.
Where can you meet monkeys in Phuket?
Big Buddha
In hot weather, wild macaques appear here less often. The monks forbid feeding them, as the monkeys are not very friendly. Despite this, the place is worth visiting: there is a majestic temple and an observation deck with a panoramic view of the island. Entry is free, but it is important to follow the rules of conduct in the temple. Unfortunately, the Big Buddha was closed for an indefinite period back in 2024 and at the moment it is not possible to visit it.
Monkey Hill
There are antennas and radars on the top of this mountain, but the real masters of this place are numerous macaques. They willingly accept treats, so tourists are advised to take bananas with them. However, after the 2020 pandemic, the monkey population has increased and they have become wilder. It is not recommended to visit the mountain with small children. Entrance is free.
Rang Hill
There is a monument to the former governor of Phuket, a relatively new observation deck and two restaurants with excellent views. During the day, you can meet wild macaques in the parking lot, waiting for treats from tourists. Entry is free.
Gibbon Rehabilitation Project
This center is not created for entertainment, but for the restoration of the gibbon population. A small area is available to visitors, where you can see several animals in cages. The main part of the center is closed to the public to minimize human impact. Nearby is the Bang Pae waterfall. Entrance to the park, including a visit to the waterfall and a guide, is 1,400 baht per person, the money goes to help wild animals.
Koh Sireh Island
A small island connected to Phuket. Here, in the shade of mangrove trees, you can watch macaques in their natural environment. The authorities have even equipped a special observation deck. There is a Buddhist temple nearby, and the place itself is quiet and peaceful. Entrance is free.
Phuket Zoo Closure
Previously, there was a zoo on the island, but due to poor conditions for the animals, it was closed. This was a big step in protecting the fauna of the region.

Is it possible to feed monkeys?
Feeding monkeys is a controversial issue. On the one hand, it attracts animals to tourist sites, but on the other, it makes them more aggressive and dependent on humans. It is important to remember the basic safety rules.
Rules of conduct when communicating with wild monkeys
- Do not tease monkeys - this may cause aggression.
- Don't sit at their height level - they may perceive you as a competitor.
- Do not attempt to pet or pick up any monkeys, especially young ones, as adult monkeys may attack.
- Don't fight them for food and things - macaques can take away glasses, phones or bags. It's better not to take valuables with you at all, so as not to worry about losing them.
- Do not throw the monkey off if it has climbed on you - this may cause aggression. It is better to bend down or sit down carefully, it will become uncomfortable and it will jump off you itself.
- Don't let children get too close - monkeys perceive them as a threat. It's better to pick up babies. Be sure to conduct independent safety instructions with older children.
- Don't show your teeth - a wide smile is seen as a threat by monkeys.
- If you are bitten or scratched by a monkey, seek medical attention immediately.
Before your trip, it's worth checking whether animal attacks are covered by your insurance. If not, you can take out extended insurance to avoid additional costs.
