What to see in Phuket on your own

What to see in Phuket on your own

Phuket is not just about beach holidays and sea excursions. Thailand's largest island offers many interesting places that can be visited independently by rented car, motorbike, or taxi. Here you'll find panoramic viewpoints, ancient temples, an atmospheric Old Town, markets, waterfalls, and unusual natural attractions.

In this article, we'll tell you what to see in Phuket on your own, which places are a must-see for your itinerary, and how to organize a trip around the island without guided tours.

Is it worth traveling around Phuket independently?

Independent trips around Phuket are suitable for those who prefer a flexible schedule and don't want to be tied to a tour group. Most popular attractions are located within an hour's drive of each other, and the roads on the island are in good condition.

For trips, people usually rent a car or a motorbike. If you don't have driving experience in Thailand, it's more convenient to use taxis or ride-hailing services.

However, it's worth noting that some natural attractions are far from tourist areas, and visiting some marine reserves without an organized tour is not possible.

Big Buddha

Big Buddha is one of Phuket's main attractions. The 45-meter-tall statue is located on top of Nakkerd Hill between Chalong and Kata districts.

The viewpoints offer panoramic views of the southern part of the island, Chalong Bay, and Kata and Karon beaches. Even the road to Big Buddha is considered one of the most beautiful on the island.

It's best to visit the complex in the morning or closer to evening when it's not too hot.

Wat Chalong Temple

Wat Chalong is the most famous and visited Buddhist temple in Phuket. It is considered an important spiritual center of the island and attracts not only tourists but also locals.

The complex includes several temple buildings, pagodas, gardens, and prayer areas. Inside the main pagoda, you can see Buddhist relics and traditional murals depicting the life of Buddha.

A visit to the temple combines well with a trip to Big Buddha, as these attractions are located close to each other.

Phuket Old Town

Phuket Old Town stands out from the island's usual tourist areas. It retains historical Sino-Portuguese architecture, cozy cafes, art galleries, and souvenir shops.

Thalang Road is considered the main street. This is where the most famous colorful house facades are located, often seen in Phuket photographs.

It's best to allocate several hours for a stroll. Old Town looks especially beautiful in the morning and evening, when the heat subsides.

Phuket Viewpoints

Phuket is famous for its viewpoints, offering some of the most beautiful views of the Andaman Sea, beaches, and tropical hills of the island. One of the most famous is Karon Viewpoint, from which you can see three famous beaches at once — Kata Noi, Kata, and Karon. Promthep Cape is another popular spot, which many consider the best place to watch the sunset in Phuket. Every evening, tourists and locals come here to admire the sun setting over the horizon. Nearby are a lighthouse, a small marine exhibition, and souvenir shops.

For those who prefer less crowded places, it is worth visiting the Windmill Viewpoint, located near Promthep. From here, picturesque views of Yanui Beach, the southern coast of the island, and numerous yachts in the sea open up. All these viewpoints are accessible for independent visits, do not require tickets, and are perfect for beautiful photos at any time of the year. They look especially spectacular at sunrise and before sunset, when the island is painted in warm golden hues.

Yanui Beach

The small Yanui Beach is located between Promthep Cape and Nai Harn Beach, making it convenient to visit during a trip to the island's southern viewpoints.

It's perfect for swimming in high season, snorkeling, and strolling along the shore. Here you can rent a kayak and explore the nearby coves on your own.

Rawai Seafood Market

One of the most interesting places to visit independently in Phuket is the Rawai Seafood Market, located in the south of the island. Here you can find a huge selection of freshly caught seafood: shrimp, lobsters, crabs, squid, octopus, sea snails, and various types of fish. Many tourists come here not only for shopping but also to experience the local atmosphere and the traditions of the fishermen who have lived on the Rawai coast for centuries.

The main feature of the market is that you can buy your favorite seafood directly from the vendors, and then take it to one of the restaurants across the street, where they will cook it for you in your preferred way for an additional fee. This allows visitors to enjoy a freshly prepared lunch or dinner and choose the ingredients for their dish themselves. A trip to the market can be conveniently combined with a stroll along Rawai Beach, a visit to Yanui Beach, Promthep Cape, or the viewpoints in the southern part of the island. The atmosphere here becomes especially vibrant in the afternoon and closer to evening, when the market comes alive and the promenade fills with locals and tourists.

Samet Nangshe

Although Samet Nangshe viewpoint is located outside Phuket, many tourists visit it independently.

The journey takes about an hour and a half from northern Phuket. Travelers are rewarded with one of the most impressive views in all of Thailand - a panorama of Phang Nga Bay with dozens of limestone islands.

The best time to visit is at sunrise.

Phuket Waterfalls

Phuket and its neighboring provinces are home to several picturesque waterfalls, which are particularly interesting to visit during and immediately after the rainy season. It is during this period that rivers and mountain streams fill with water, making the waterfalls most powerful and impressive. Surrounded by dense tropical jungles, they offer a glimpse of another side of the island, distinct from its beaches and seascapes.

It is worth noting that during the high dry season, especially from January to April, many waterfalls significantly diminish, and some turn into small streams. Therefore, nature lovers should plan their visit in autumn or early winter, when, after the rainy season, water levels remain high and the waterfalls appear most spectacular. A hike to the waterfalls will be an excellent addition to an independent trip around the island and will allow you to experience the tropical nature of Phuket.

Naka Weekend Market

If you want to experience the local cuisine and atmosphere of the island, be sure to visit Naka Market.

Here you'll find Thai dishes, seafood, fruits, clothes, souvenirs, and many other goods. The market operates on weekends and is considered one of the largest in Phuket.

Mai Khao Airplane Beach

Mai Khao Beach is famous for the opportunity to watch planes landing at Phuket International Airport.

At certain times of the year, planes fly very low over the beach, allowing for impressive photographs.

However, it is important to remember that the intensity of flights depends on wind direction and weather conditions.

Which places are best to visit with a tour

Many attractions in Phuket can indeed be visited independently. For example, tourists often go independently to Racha and Coral islands, and also organize trips to Phi Phi. Moreover, on our website, there is a separate detailed guide on how to get to Phi Phi independently. However, in practice, this option requires independently searching for transport providers, buying tickets, coordinating transfers, and planning the route.

For most travelers, it is much more convenient to entrust the organization of the trip to professionals. We have already selected the most interesting programs, verified transport providers, compared routes, and can advise which excursion is best suited for your vacation. Some tourists value early departure and avoiding crowds, others prefer a comfortable catamaran, and still others want to visit the maximum number of islands in one day. Our managers will help you choose the optimal option considering your preferences, accommodation area, and season.

Separately, it's worth mentioning the Similan and Surin Islands. It's impossible to visit these national marine parks independently. According to the rules of Thailand's national parks, prior registration of visitors is required for a visit, and the trip must be conducted as part of a licensed tour company or accompanied by an accredited guide. That is why all excursions to the Similan and Surin Islands are organized and include the necessary permits, transfers, accompaniment, and national park fees.

The same applies to a number of remote destinations, such as Cheo Lan Lake, Khao Lak National Park, and some routes in Phang Nga Province. As part of an excursion, tourists receive not only transport and accompaniment, but also the opportunity to see more interesting places in one day without the need to independently resolve organizational issues. Thanks to this, the vacation is more comfortable, richer, and allows you to make the most efficient use of your holiday time in Phuket.

Evening shows, water park, aquarium, ziplines, and many other attractions in Phuket are available for independent visits. Tickets can be purchased directly at the ticket office on the day of the visit, but this option is not always the most cost-effective. For our clients, special prices and discounts are available for many popular island attractions, so advance booking often allows for significant savings. In addition, we can help you choose a suitable program, inform you about available ticket options, and, if necessary, arrange a transfer, which will make your vacation even more comfortable.

Independently in Phuket, you can visit dozens of interesting places — from temples and viewpoints to markets and picturesque beaches. To explore the island, simply rent a car or use a taxi and create your own itinerary for the attractions you're interested in.

However, if you want to see the most beautiful islands of Thailand, national parks, or remote natural locations, it's better to choose organized excursions with experienced guides and comfortable transfers.
