Phuket in May: Weather, Sea, Excursions, Pros and Cons of a Vacation
May is considered the beginning of the rainy season in Phuket, but this does not mean that your vacation will be spoiled by bad weather. Many tourists imagine May as a month of continuous downpours, but in reality, the climate at this time is much milder. Rains do indeed become more frequent, but most often they are short-lived and occur in the evening, at night, or in the early morning, leaving most of the day sunny.

May marks the beginning of the low tourist season, making Phuket quieter. Prices for accommodation, car rental, and some tourist services decrease, and there is much more free space on the beaches.
What is the weather like in Phuket in May?
In May, the daytime air temperature is usually 30–32°C, and at night it stays within 25–27°C. Despite the beginning of the rainy season, the island remains very warm, and high humidity makes the climate truly tropical.
The water temperature in the Andaman Sea remains high — around 29–30°C, so swimming is still comfortable. However, in the second half of the month, the sea becomes rougher. Waves gradually appear on the west coast of Phuket, and on some beaches, lifeguards may put up red flags prohibiting swimming due to strong rip currents.
Even in cloudy weather, the sun remains very active. Clouds practically do not block ultraviolet radiation, so sunscreen should be used daily.

Why you should vacation in Phuket in May
The main advantage of May is the decrease in the number of tourists. After the high season ends, beaches become significantly less crowded, queues disappear at popular attractions, and the atmosphere on the island becomes more relaxed.
Another important plus is the prices. In May, accommodation in hotels, rental of villas and apartments, as well as cars and motorbikes, become noticeably cheaper. For many travelers, this month is an opportunity to vacation in Phuket with lower costs than in winter.
Nature in May looks especially picturesque. After the first rains, the island becomes vibrant green, waterfalls fill with water again, and tropical vegetation comes alive after the dry season.
Despite the beginning of the rainy season, there are still enough sunny hours for a beach vacation. In many cases, a short downpour ends as quickly as it begins, after which the sun reappears.

What are the disadvantages of vacationing in May?
The main feature of May is unstable weather. Although prolonged rains are rare, the probability of precipitation is already significantly higher than in winter or spring.
In the second half of the month, the southwest monsoon intensifies, making the sea rougher. Strong waves and dangerous rip currents may appear on Phuket's western beaches. On such days, it is important to follow the lifeguards' recommendations and not enter the water if red warning flags are displayed.
It should also be noted that due to weather conditions, some sea excursions may be rescheduled. This happens not because of rain, but only in case of strong winds and high waves, when it becomes unsafe for boats to go out to sea.

Which excursions are available in Phuket in May?
Most excursions in May continue to operate as usual. Rain itself almost never causes a program to be canceled. Often, a short downpour occurs in the morning, and just a few hours later, sunny weather sets in.
Until May 15th, tourists can still visit the Similan and Surin Islands. After this date, national parks are closed annually for nature restoration and reopen only on October 15th.
Excursions to the islands of Phi Phi, James Bond, Racha, Coral, and to Phang Nga Bay continue. However, in case of a strong storm warning, marine programs may be rescheduled or canceled in accordance with the recommendations of the Thai Meteorological Department. Therefore, if you are planning several marine excursions, it is better not to leave them until the last days of your vacation - in case of bad weather, you will have the opportunity to choose another date.
Land excursions are practically independent of weather conditions. Tourists continue to visit the Big Buddha temple, Phuket Old Town, viewpoints, elephant sanctuaries, water parks, and ziplines. Also, evening shows, restaurants, and entertainment complexes operate without changes.
Is it worth going to Phuket in May?
May is perfect for travelers who want to relax in Phuket without a large number of tourists and significantly save money. Despite the beginning of the rainy season, the island still pleases with warm sea, hot weather, and a large number of sunny days.

If you are prepared for occasional short tropical downpours and minor changes in sea excursion schedules, May will be a wonderful time for a vacation. And for many tourists, lower prices, lush nature, and a calm atmosphere become significant advantages compared to the high season.
