Ao Yon Beach in Phuket: A Quiet, Wave-Free Bay for Summer Relaxation
Ao Yon Beach is one of Phuket's most tranquil and lesser-known beaches. It is located on the island's east coast, on the picturesque Panwa Cape, away from popular tourist areas. Thanks to its location in a sheltered bay, Ao Yon is considered one of the few beaches in Phuket where large waves are virtually non-existent, even during the rainy season.

This area is rarely included in package tours; there are no large tourist quarters, noisy bars, or many vacationers. This is why Ao Yon is chosen by travelers who want to see a quieter, non-touristy Phuket.
The beach is conditionally divided into two parts — Ao Yon Noi and Ao Yon Yai — each with its own characteristics.
Where is Ao Yon Beach located?
Ao Yon is located on Panwa Cape, approximately 20–25 minutes drive from Phuket Town and about 40–50 minutes from the island's popular western beaches.
Thanks to its distance from the main tourist routes, a peaceful atmosphere is maintained here. There is no dense development in the area, and traffic is significantly lighter than on Karon, Kata, or Patong.
What makes Ao Yon Beach special?
The main advantage of Ao Yon is its sheltered bay. While high waves and dangerous rip currents rise on the west coast in summer, the sea here usually remains calm.
This is why many expats and locals come here to swim during the rainy season.
The beach is surrounded by green hills, palm trees, and small yacht moorings, creating a beautiful seascape.
Beach Infrastructure
Ao Yon Noi is located in the northern part of the bay. Here you'll find the popular Panwaburi Beachfront Resort, which has become famous far beyond Thailand for its unusual pools and architecture.
During high tide, this part of the beach looks very picturesque and is excellent for swimming. However, during strong low tides, the sea recedes far from the shore. A few years ago, you could see parts of the seabed with trash and glass here, but now the area is significantly cleaner thanks to regular cleaning.

For comfortable swimming, it's better to choose the left side of the beach — closer to the restaurant and the open part of the bay. The area near the bridge is less appealing, as it's home to a small fishing boat mooring and a storm drain, which locals often call the "stinky river."

In the evenings and on weekends, makashnits (street food stalls) with Thai food, fruits, and drinks appear along the road. This place is popular among locals, so it gets quite lively in the evening.
The main part of the beach — Ao Yon Yai — is considered the most comfortable for relaxation. Here you'll find the hotels Bandara Beach Resort Phuket and Bandara Villas Phuket, as well as cozy cafes with sea views.

On the shore, there are diving centers, and you can rent SUP boards, kayaks, and go for a stroll in the calm bay. Nearby are small 7-Eleven and Tops Daily stores, massage parlors, exchange offices, fruit stalls, and several restaurants.
Who is Ao Yon suitable for?
This area is ideal for those seeking peace and quiet and a relaxed holiday away from noisy tourist streets.
Ao Yon is especially popular with families with small children due to the absence of strong waves, couples choosing a romantic vacation, and travelers planning a long stay in Phuket.
Despite the small amount of infrastructure, there is everything necessary for a comfortable stay: shops, cafes, massage parlors, pharmacies, and currency exchange.
Another advantage of the area is its proximity to Phuket Town. Thanks to the absence of serious traffic jams, it is easy to get to large shopping centers, night markets, restaurants, and the historical center of the city.
What to see nearby
Near the beach are two famous viewpoints of Panwa Cape — Khao Khad View Tower and Khao Khad Viewpoint, offering beautiful panoramic views of Chalong Bay, the southern islands of Phuket, and the east coast.
Also nearby is the Phuket Aquarium, which is especially interesting for families with children.
Those who enjoy walks can head to Panwa Cape, where there are small beaches, cozy restaurants, and picturesque sea views.

Ao Yon Beach in Summer
Ao Yon is considered one of Phuket's best beaches for a vacation during the rainy season.
From May to October, there are virtually no strong waves here, making swimming possible much more often than on the island's west coast.
This is why many families with children specifically choose this area for their summer vacation.
During strong low tides, the water recedes quite far. On such days, stingrays are sometimes found in shallow waters. Warning signs are posted on the beach, so it is recommended to watch your step carefully and not enter the water barefoot in very shallow areas.
Excursions from Ao Yon Beach
Almost all sea and land excursions in Phuket are available from the Ao Yon area. However, some programs may require an additional payment for group transfer. It is recommended to clarify the exact cost when booking.
Without additional transfer fees, guests in the area can go on the company's most popular excursions.
These programs include:
"Phi Phi + Bamboo" with early or standard departure,
"James Bond + Krabi" with early departure,
combined program "James Bond + Phi Phi"
two-day trip "James Bond + Krabi + Phi Phi,"
as well as a visit to an ethical elephant sanctuary with the opportunity to swim with elephants on the beach.
During the high season, from October 15 to May 15, excursions to the Similan and Surin Islands are also available without an additional transfer fee.
Should you choose Ao Yon?
Ao Yon is one of Phuket's most underrated beaches. It won't suit lovers of noisy parties, large shopping centers, and vibrant nightlife, but it will be an excellent choice for those who value tranquility, beautiful nature, and a sea without waves.
If you are planning a vacation in Phuket in summer or traveling with small children, Ao Yon can rightly be called one of the best options for a beach holiday on the island.
