What to do in Phuket on a rainy day: entertainment and interesting places

In Phuket's tropical climate, rain is a common occurrence, but it shouldn't stand in the way of an enjoyable day. Here are a few activities you can enjoy when it rains.

Shopping

 Visit Phuket's shops and shopping malls, where you can enjoy your time and buy souvenirs for yourself and your loved ones. Thai cooking classes

The classes are held indoors and often begin with a short market tour (weather permitting), after which participants prepare 3–5 traditional Thai dishes. This is a great way to enjoy a rainy day and learn more about local ingredients, spices, and customs.  

They are suitable for all skill levels—from first-time knife users to those who already enjoy cooking. At the end of the class, you can taste everything you've prepared and take home the recipes. Cinemas

Most screenings feature Asian films in Thai, but there are also international films and animated movies in English. In the winter of 2024, there were Russian-language screenings of Russian films, but this is more of an exception than the rule.

 Phuket has several cinemas located in shopping and entertainment centers: Central Phuket (in the Central Festival building), JungCeylon, Robinson Lifestyle (Chalong and Talang), and Coliseum (located in Phuket Town, which has only a few shops and cafes in addition to the cinema, but the old town is also nearby and worth exploring).

 Be sure to bring warm clothes or a blanket, as the air conditioning in the theaters is very effective. It gets very cool inside, even on the hottest days. 

Trampoline parks

No special training is required to jump on a trampoline, but it is important to choose comfortable sportswear and follow the safety rules. Before visiting, check the age restrictions and any health contraindications.

There are several trampoline parks to visit in Phuket:

• 50FLY Trampoline Club Phuket — an indoor trampoline club on the second floor of the Big C Supercenter in the Wichit area, near Phuket Town. It features professional trampolines, a foam pit, a gymnastics area, and a climbing wall.

• Froggy's Fun Park — an indoor entertainment center on the third floor of the Jungceylon shopping mall in Patong. In addition to trampolines, it features an obstacle course, a children's play area, and other attractions. According to the center's website, trampoline zone entry starts at 490 baht. The center is open daily from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. 

Children's play centers with trampolines and soft play areas are also available, such as OTO Play Park in the Central Phuket Floresta shopping mall and Robinson Lifestyle Chalong.

Important: Trampolining may be contraindicated for certain musculoskeletal conditions, pregnancy, and flare-ups of chronic illnesses. If you have any health concerns, consult a doctor before visiting.

Ceramics Studio 

This is a great activity for adults and children. It is located in Phuket Town and can be found on maps as Sitao Studio. The price starts at 250 baht, and the session lasts about 1.5 hours. You will create your own piece under the close guidance of the staff, leave it to be fired, and pick it up approximately 1–4 weeks later (the timeframe depends on how busy they are). If you are only in Phuket for a short time, they can arrange delivery directly to your home.

Baan Teelanka Upside-Down House

If you are looking for an unusual activity on a rainy day, check out Baan Teelanka — Upside Down House near Phuket Town. This three-story building is literally built upside down: the roof is at the bottom, and the furniture, household items, and interior are mounted above your head. Visitors enter through the roof and move from room to room as if they are walking on the ceiling.

The main attraction is the opportunity to take fun photos with optical illusions. You can "stand" on the living room ceiling, hang from a bed, or pose as if gravity no longer applied. The staff can help you choose the best angles to make your photos look especially impressive.

The complex also offers other attractions:

• A-Maze-in-Phuket — a garden maze covering about 1,000 m², where you must find your way out through the green hedges.

• Chamber of Secrets — escape rooms where you must solve puzzles and find clues.

• Additional games, including VR attractions.

Baan Teelanka is suitable for families with children, groups of friends, and anyone who enjoys unusual photos. The building itself is indoors, so you can visit it even on a rainy day, but it is best to leave the maze for a time when there is no heavy rain.

Plan to spend about 45–60 minutes there, or more if you plan to go through the maze and play the escape rooms. The complex is located in the Ratsada area, not far from the bypass road. According to the official website, it is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., but it is best to check the current opening hours and ticket prices before you go.

Target Phuket Archery Club

A great place for a family outing where you can try your hand at archery. Prices start at 400 baht per hour and include all the necessary equipment. 

The instructors speak decent English and will give you the necessary instructions.

Aquariums and marine life museum

Aquariums are one option for rainy-day entertainment in Phuket. Here you can discover the inhabitants of the underwater world, see tropical fish and other marine animals, and learn more about the marine ecosystem of the Andaman Sea.

There are two different aquariums on the island. Phuket Aquarium is located on Panwa Cape, on the grounds of the Phuket Marine Biological Center. This is a government educational project featuring aquariums, an underwater tunnel, and exhibits dedicated to the region's marine life. You can combine a visit here with a trip to the island's east coast.

Aquaria Phuket is located on the B1 basement level of the Central Phuket Floresta shopping mall. It is a larger space featuring thousands of marine animals, themed zones, and educational activities. Thanks to its location inside the shopping mall, it is easy to include in your plans for a rainy day: after visiting, you can have lunch, go shopping, or explore the neighboring entertainment spaces.

Located next to Aquaria is the MAYA Museum — a digital and media art museum featuring visual installations and impressive photo zones. You can visit it as an addition to your aquarium visit, especially if you are traveling with children or enjoy unusual interactive spaces.

Water park

Rain in Phuket doesn't necessarily mean you have to give up on water activities! If the weather is warm, the rain is brief, and thunderstorms and strong winds do not disrupt the rides, you can head to the water park. The main thing is to monitor the weather and keep in mind that some slides and pools may close temporarily during thunderstorms.

Andamanda Phuket — a large themed water park with water slides, pools, artificial waves, and Thai-style relaxation areas. It has attractions for both thrill-seekers and families with children. And if the rain stops quickly, you can continue your visit and enjoy the tropical atmosphere.

Saunas and baths

A rainy day in Phuket is a great excuse to enjoy a full day of relaxation in a sauna or bath complex. The island has traditional Russian baths with steam rooms and birch branches, Finnish saunas, hammams, Japanese onsens, and spa spaces with hot and cold pools. Some complexes allow you to spend several hours alternating between steam rooms, bathing, massages, and relaxing in the lounge area.

Interesting options include KEDR Spa & Sauna in the Si Suntong area, DOPA Sauna & Wellness Club in Cherngtalay, KAIF in Kathu, and SAMA Onsen & Massage in Phuket Town. Before visiting, check the prices, the availability of individual areas, and whether advance booking is required. This is especially important on rainy days when more people want to relax at a spa.

You may also consider a trip to Mantra Forest Spa — a large spa complex in the middle of a tropical forest in the neighboring province of Phang Nga. Here you can spend several hours moving between Japanese onsens, herbal and mineral pools, saunas, and an ice bath. It is an excellent option for a full day of relaxation on a rainy day, especially if you want to combine wellness treatments with the unique atmosphere of a tropical forest. The complex is about a one-hour drive from Phuket, so it is best to plan your trip in advance.

Massage and spa

Rainy weather is a great excuse to dedicate time to yourself and experience the traditions of Thai massage. Phuket has hundreds of massage parlors and spa centers where you can relax, recharge, and try a variety of body care treatments.

Museums and cultural centers

A rainy day is a good opportunity to learn about Phuket's history and culture. The island has museums, historic mansions, and exhibition spaces that tell the stories of Chinese immigrants, the tin-mining era, local traditions, and the development of the island's modern appearance.

Most museums are conveniently located in Phuket Old Town. For example, the Thai Hua Museum offers insights into the Chinese community and its influence on the island's development, while the Thavorn Phuket Museum features a collection of antiques, photographs, and items related to the history of the local hotel industry. The historic Baan Chinpracha house preserves the interior of an old mansion in the Sino-Portuguese style. 

If you are interested in the island's industrial history, check out the Mining Museum in Kathu, which is dedicated to tin mining and the lives of local communities. Those who want to learn more about Peranakan culture—the descendants of Chinese immigrants whose traditions blended with local ones—should visit the Peranakan Phuket Museum. 

Choose a museum based on your interests: some focus more on history, while others highlight architecture, daily life, and traditions. Many small exhibits can be viewed in an hour, so you can visit several places in a single day if you wish. Circus in Phuket

If you want to add some excitement to a rainy day, check out Phuket Circus in Kathu. This modern circus show features aerial acrobats, tightrope walkers, fire effects, and thrilling "Wheel of Death" stunts. One highlight of the show is a motorcycle act inside a metal sphere. Animals do not perform in the show.

The show takes place in an indoor arena, so the weather will not prevent you from enjoying the performance. Two shows are held daily, except on Tuesdays: the matinee begins at 2:30 p.m., and the evening show begins at 7:30 p.m.. The performance lasts about an hour. The circus is suitable for families with children and groups of friends looking for an unusual way to spend time on the island.

Evening shows

Rainy weather will not stop you from enjoying a spectacular evening in Phuket. The island hosts large-scale theatrical productions, cultural shows featuring Thai legends and myths, colorful cabaret shows, and modern circus performances. Many of these take place in indoor theaters, making them suitable for entertainment in any weather.

Fans of Thai culture should check out Siam Niramit — a large-scale show featuring traditional dances, spectacular sets, and stories of Thailand's past. Phuket FantaSea combines a theatrical show about Thai myths and legends with a theme park and restaurant. Carnival Magic impresses with festive decorations, light installations, and a colorful parade.

If you're looking for something more dynamic, you can choose Simon Cabaret with its colorful costumes, dance numbers, and musical performances, or go to a circus show with acrobatic stunts and spectacular effects.

Excursions

If the rain is brief and not accompanied by a storm, you can still go to the islands – the weather may be better there. If the sea is rough, bus excursions to the mainland: national parks and rafting are available. A raincoat will help keep you dry, and the jungle will impress you with its beauty even on a cloudy and rainy day.
