Chakri Dynasty Day in Thailand: History of the holiday, Rama I and the kings of the Chakri Dynasty, traditions, and how April 6th is celebrated

April 6th marks one of Thailand's most important public holidays — Chakri Dynasty Day. On this day, all members of the ruling dynasty are honored, and its founder is remembered. In 2026, the holiday will also be celebrated on April 6th, and this date remains unchanged year after year.

The founder of the Chakri Dynasty was Buddhayodfa Chulaloke, better known as Rama I. In 1782, he declared himself King of Siam and ushered in a new era in the country's history. It was under his rule that the modern capital, Bangkok, was founded, becoming the political, economic, and cultural center of the state.

Rama I (1737–1809), born Thong Duang, rose from a courtier to a ruler. From a young age, he served at court, participated in military and state affairs, and later became one of King Taksin's closest associates. After a period of political instability and a coup in 1782, he ascended to the throne.

It was Rama I who:

• moved the capital to Bangkok and began the city's construction;

• strengthened the state and restored order after wars;

• created the foundation of the legal system, including the "Three Seals Law" code;

• actively developed culture, literature, and Buddhism;

• supported the preservation of traditions and national identity.

He is known as a wise ruler, poet, and the founder of a new state system. After his death in 1809, the throne passed to his son, Rama II, and since then, royal power in Thailand has been passed down through the male line.

Kings of the Chakri Dynasty:

• Rama I — 1782–1809

• Rama II — 1809–1824

• Rama III — 1824–1851

• Rama IV — 1851–1868

• Rama V — 1868–1910 (implemented extensive reforms, including the abolition of slavery)

• Rama VI — 1910–1925

• Rama VII — 1925–1935 (during his reign, the transition to a constitutional monarchy occurred)

• Rama VIII — 1935–1946

• Rama IX — 1946–2016 (one of the most revered kings in Thai history)

• Rama X — 2016–present

The Chakri Dynasty is considered one of the longest-reigning in the world and is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

How the holiday is celebrated

April 6th is an official public holiday in Thailand. Solemn and religious events take place across the country. In Bangkok, ceremonies are traditionally held at royal monuments and temples, including offerings to monks and the laying of flowers. Many Thais visit temples, make offerings, and participate in charity on this day.

This day is also often accompanied by:

• ceremonies honoring ancestors and the royal family;

• public events and symbolic decorations of government buildings;

• restrictions on entertainment events;

• possible bans or restrictions on alcohol sales.

Chakri Dynasty Day is not just a public holiday, but an important part of Thailand's culture and national identity. It symbolizes respect for the monarchy, the country's history, and the traditions that unite the Thai people.
