Old Phuket Town: What to See, Where to Go, and How to Get There

Old Phuket Town: What to See, Where to Go, and How to Get There

Phuket Old Town is one of the island's most famous attractions and a must-visit during your vacation in Thailand. If you're looking for things to see in Phuket Old Town, places to visit independently, or ways to diversify your beach holiday, the island's historic center is an excellent choice. There are no noisy beaches or first-line hotels here, but there are cozy streets, colorful Sino-Portuguese style buildings, ancient temples, atmospheric cafes, art galleries, and many interesting places for walks and photoshoots.

The Old Town is located in Phuket Town – the administrative center of the island. This is where Phuket's modern history began. In the second half of the 19th century, thanks to tin mining, the town transformed into a major trading hub, attracting merchants from China, Malaysia, and Europe. As a result, a unique architectural style emerged, combining European and Asian traditions. Today, Phuket Old Town is considered one of Thailand's most beautiful historic districts and is recommended in almost all island guidebooks.

Where is Phuket Old Town and How to Get There

The Old Town is located in the eastern part of the island, approximately 20–30 minutes' drive from popular resorts like Patong, Karon, and Kata. You can get here by taxi, rented car, motorbike, or public transport. Many sightseeing tours of Phuket also include a visit to the historic center, but an independent walk allows you to explore the streets at your own pace, pop into interesting shops and cafes, and spend as much time as you like.

The best time to visit is in the morning or evening when the heat is less intense, and the soft light makes the old buildings especially beautiful for photos.

What to See in Phuket Old Town

Thalang Road is considered the main street of the Old Town. This is where the famous colorful mansions with arched windows, carved shutters, and decorative facades are located, which have long been Phuket's hallmark. Almost all photos you see when searching for "Phuket Old Town" are taken right here.

Dibuk Road, Phang Nga Road, Soi Romanee, and Yaowarat Road are no less interesting. During your stroll, you can see beautifully preserved buildings from the early 20th century, small art workshops, cafes, museums, souvenir shops, and restaurants located in old mansions. It is this combination of Sino-Portuguese architecture, unhurried atmosphere, and modern city life that makes Phuket's historic center completely unlike other areas of the island.

Attractions in Phuket Old Town

In addition to its historic buildings, the Old Town is famous for its temples and cultural monuments. One of the main Buddhist shrines is Wat Mongkol Nimit, which is open to tourists. Equally interesting are the Chinese shrines, which reflect the long-standing influence of the Chinese community on the island's development. Chinese immigrants played an important role in establishing Phuket as a major trading center, and their cultural heritage is still evident in the architecture, cuisine, traditions, and annual festivals. When visiting temples, remember the rules of conduct.

One of the most popular attractions in the Old Town is the Sunday Walking Street market, which takes place on Thalang Road. Every Sunday, the historic center transforms into a large pedestrian zone with dozens of stalls where you can try Thai cuisine, buy local crafts, clothes, jewelry, souvenirs, and watch street musicians perform. This is why many tourists try to visit the Old Town on Sundays to combine a stroll through the historic district with a visit to one of Phuket's best night markets.

The Chinese shrines are no less interesting, the most famous of which is Jui Tui Shrine. This temple is the spiritual center of Phuket's Chinese community and the main venue for the famous Vegetarian Festival, held annually in autumn and attracting thousands of tourists from all over the world. Also worth visiting are Bang Neow Shrine and Sang Tham Shrine (Lim Hu Tai Su) — the island's oldest Chinese shrines with richly decorated facades and traditional interiors.

History buffs will find the Thai Hua Museum interesting, located in a beautiful Sino-Portuguese style mansion. The exhibition tells about Phuket's history, the development of tin mining, the lives of Chinese immigrants, and the formation of the island's modern appearance. Nearby is the Phuket Museum, where you can learn more about the city's past and cultural heritage.

One of the unusual attractions is Baan Chinpracha — one of the few historic mansions that have preserved their original early 20th-century interiors. Films and TV shows have been shot here, and visitors can see how wealthy families lived during the heyday of tin trade.

During your walk, be sure to pay attention to the numerous street art and murals adorning the streets of the Old Town. Many murals are dedicated to Phuket's history, local culture, and island life, turning the stroll into a kind of artistic excursion.

How much time is needed to visit the Old Town?

Two to four hours are usually sufficient to explore Phuket Old Town. During this time, you can leisurely walk along the main streets, visit temples, take beautiful photos, and pop into cafes and souvenir shops. If you plan to visit museums, art galleries, and the Sunday market, the excursion can easily take up most of the day.

Thanks to the compact size of the area, it is perfect for independent exploration. All major attractions are within walking distance of each other, so there is hardly any need for transport within the historic center.

Is Phuket Old Town Worth Visiting?

If you want to see Phuket not only as a popular beach resort but also to get acquainted with its history, culture, and architecture, be sure to include Phuket Old Town in your itinerary. The Old Town is perfect for walking, getting to know local cuisine, visiting temples, beautiful photoshohoots, and a relaxing holiday away from the noisy beaches.

Today, Phuket Old Town is rightfully considered one of the island's main attractions. It has preserved the unique atmosphere of an old trading town where Thai, Chinese, and European traditions intertwine. That is why it remains one of the most popular places among tourists who want to see the real Phuket and discover its historical heritage.
