Tax Refund in Thailand: How to Apply for a VAT Refund
In Thailand, the VAT refund program is an attractive bonus for tourists, especially those planning significant purchases during their trip. This refund is 7% of the cost of goods, including such categories as branded items, technology and jewelry.
To receive a tax refund, you must meet the following conditions:
- The program is available only to foreign tourists.
- Thai citizens, diplomats and crew members are not eligible for a tax refund, nor are holders of "long-term visas" (student, work, pension, etc.).
- The total amount of purchases in one store on one receipt must be at least 2,000 baht.
- The product must be purchased no later than 60 days before departure from Thailand and only in offline stores.
Not all goods are eligible for the VAT refund program, such as services, food and drinks. The process begins with filling out a P10 form in the store, which will require a tourist passport. It is important to check that all data is filled in correctly, as even the slightest error can result in a refusal of the return.
Tax refunds are only possible at international airports in Thailand, such as Phuket Airport. There, you must present a completed P10 form, your passport, and a receipt for your purchase. Sometimes you will also need to show the item you purchased, so it should not be packed in your luggage (this usually applies to expensive purchases, see photo below).
Refunds can be received in both Thai baht and dollars, in cash or to an account. However, amounts over 30,000 baht are refunded only by bank transfer and subject to a service fee of 100 baht.
