What to Pack for Your Child for Phuket: A Complete List

What to Pack for Your Child for Phuket: A Complete List

A trip to Phuket with a child requires a bit more preparation than a typical beach holiday. The tropical climate, bright sun, high humidity, sea, swimming pools, and a long flight — all these should be considered when packing your suitcase.

However, there's no need to bring half your home with you. In Phuket, it's easy to buy clothes, cosmetics, diapers, baby food, toys, and other essentials. It's much more important to prepare documents, medicines, sun protection, and what your child will need during the journey in advance.

Let's figure out what to bring for a child to Phuket, how much clothing will be needed, what first aid kit to pack, and what's best to buy already in Thailand.

Clothing for a child in Phuket

The island is warm all year round, so the basis of a child's wardrobe should be light clothing made of cotton and other breathable materials.

For a typical 1–2 week trip, a child will need several T-shirts, shorts, light trousers or skirts, underwear, and a few sets of sleepwear. Don't bring too many clothes: some items can be quickly washed at the hotel, apartment, or in one of the many laundromats.

Be sure to pack one light set of long-sleeved clothing. It will come in handy in the evenings, in strongly air-conditioned rooms, and during trips.

It's also worth taking a light sweater or hoodie. Air conditioning can be quite strong on the plane, in shopping malls, restaurants, and during evening shows.

If the child is small, it's better to increase the amount of spare clothing: heat, water, sand, and ice cream provide plenty of reasons for changing.

What to bring for a child to the beach

For a beach holiday in Phuket, you'll need several swimsuits or trunks, a hat, and sun-protective beachwear.

It's especially convenient to have a children's UV-protective T-shirt or rash guard. It covers most of the body and helps reduce the time a child spends directly in the sun. If you don't have special closed beachwear, you can buy it at any shopping mall in Phuket.

The list of beach essentials should include:

  • swimsuit or trunks;
  • long-sleeved rash guard;
  • panama hat, cap, or other headwear;
  • sunglasses;
  • beach sandals or aqua shoes;
  • sunscreen;
  • a small towel if the hotel doesn't provide one;
  • familiar beach toys.

For small children, protective water shoes may also be useful. Some beaches have rocks, shells, and other sharp objects.

Sunscreen for a child

This is one thing you definitely shouldn't forget.

In Phuket, the sun is significantly more active than many tourists are used to seeing in northern countries. Children are recommended to use high SPF sunscreen and reapply it regularly, especially after swimming.

If the child is used to a specific cream and has sensitive skin, it's best to bring their usual product from home. Buying sunscreen in Phuket is not a problem, but experimenting with new cosmetics directly during a vacation is not always wise.

Also, don't rely solely on cream. Headwear, long-sleeved clothing, shade, and limiting exposure to open sun during the hottest hours are equally important.

Children's footwear

You don't need to bring a lot of shoes.

For most trips, ordinary sandals or light sneakers, beach shoes, and, if necessary, one closed pair are sufficient.

Sneakers will be useful for excursions, walks, visiting parks, and other places where open-toed shoes might be uncomfortable.

If the child plays sports or you plan to visit sports centers, it's better to bring appropriate footwear from home.

What to put in a child's first aid kit

It's best to pack a basic first aid kit for your child before the trip. Phuket has pharmacies and medical facilities, but searching for the right remedy at night or trying to explain the name of a medication to a pharmacist in a foreign language is not the best option.

The first aid kit may include familiar remedies that the child has already used: a thermometer, products for treating minor abrasions, plasters, antiseptic, motion sickness remedies if the child uses them, and doctor-prescribed medications.

If the child regularly takes medications, it's best to bring the necessary supply in its original packaging. For some medications, special transportation and import rules may apply, so it's worth checking the requirements in advance.

There's no need to assemble a huge first aid kit "for all occasions." Phuket has modern clinics and pharmacies, and for serious problems, it's better to see a doctor rather than trying to treat the child yourself.

Mosquito repellents

Mosquitoes are present in Phuket all year round, so repellent will be useful.

For a child, it's best to choose a product appropriate for their age and follow the manufacturer's instructions. For evening walks, light, closed clothing and repellent are useful, especially if you are going to areas with a lot of greenery.

In the bedroom and room, it's also worth using a mosquito net, if available, and other insect protection methods.

What to bring for a child for the flight

If you are flying to Phuket from Russia, Europe, or another country far from Thailand, the journey can take many hours. Therefore, it's best to pack a separate carry-on bag for the child.

It should contain documents, necessary medicines, a change of clothes, wipes, familiar snacks, water after security checks, a favorite toy, and entertainment.

For older children, a tablet, headphones, pre-downloaded cartoons, and games will be very useful. You can also bring a coloring book, books, stickers, or a small new toy.

Be sure to put a change of clothes in your carry-on luggage, even if your main luggage is checked. After a long flight, such foresight can be very helpful.

Baby food and snacks

If the child is small or used to specific food, it's best to bring some familiar products with you, after checking airline rules and food import regulations.

In Phuket, you can easily find supermarkets, stores with imported products, and baby food. However, the specific brand your child is used to might not be available in your particular area.

For the journey, it's convenient to bring familiar dry snacks, children's bars, cookies, or other products that the child tolerates well.

Don't arrange a gastronomic experiment for your child on the first day of vacation. After a long flight, it's better to stick to their usual diet and gradually introduce them to local cuisine.

Is a stroller needed in Phuket?

If you're traveling with a small child, a stroller can significantly ease your vacation.

Even if the child rarely uses a stroller at home, in Phuket it can be useful for long walks, shopping malls, the airport, and evening outings.

For getting around the island, a compact folding model is more convenient. If the child is small, it's worth checking with the airline about stroller transportation rules in advance.

However, it's important to note that not all areas have sidewalks, and not all sidewalks in Phuket are stroller-friendly. In some areas, it's easier to get around with the child in your arms or use a compact lightweight stroller.

Toys and entertainment

There's no need to bring a large supply of toys.

It's better to choose a few favorites and one or two small new toys that might interest the child during the journey.

Phuket has many places where children will find entertainment without their usual toys: beaches, swimming pools, playrooms, water parks, children's cafes, and various attractions.

If your child likes to draw, pack a small set of pencils and a notebook. For trips, it's convenient to have a small bag or backpack that the child can carry themselves.

What to bring for a child for sleep

If the child has trouble falling asleep in an unfamiliar place, bring a familiar sleep-related item: a favorite toy, a small pillow, a blanket, or another familiar object.

This is especially useful in the first few days after the flight, when the child has to get used to a new bed, climate, and time zone simultaneously.

There's no need to bring all the bedding from home. Most hotels and apartments provide the necessary amenities.

What you don't need to bring with you

In Phuket, you can buy almost everything your child needs, so there's no need to overload your suitcases.

You don't need to bring a large supply of shampoo, shower gel, wet wipes, clothes, and toys. Children's products are sold in large supermarkets, shopping malls, and specialized stores.

However, if the child uses a specific brand of food, cosmetics, diapers, or medicinal product, it's better to bring a small supply from home.

Full list of items for a child in Phuket

Before your trip, it's convenient to use a short checklist:

Documents: child's passport, travel documents, medical insurance, and necessary booking confirmations.

Clothing: T-shirts, shorts, underwear, sleepwear, light trousers, long-sleeved top.

Beach: swimsuit or trunks, rash guard, hat, sunglasses, beach shoes, sunscreen.

First aid kit: familiar medicines, prescribed medications, thermometer, plasters, and remedies for minor injuries.

For the flight: change of clothes, wipes, snacks, water, toys, tablet, headphones, and chargers.

For walks: small backpack, repellent, water bottle, and comfortable shoes.

For sleep: favorite toy or other familiar item.

What's most important to bring for a child to Phuket

The most important thing is not the quantity of items in the suitcase, but the right selection. Documents, medicines, sun protection, headwear, comfortable clothing, swimwear, and items for a comfortable flight will be genuinely useful for almost every family.

Everything else can be bought on the island if needed. So, there's no need to turn packing into an expedition: Phuket is a developed tourist region, and finding children's products here is usually not difficult.

If the trip is long, it's wiser to bring fewer clothes and leave room in the suitcase for purchases in Phuket. However, items that the child is used to and that are difficult to replace quickly should be packed in advance.
