Answers to the most frequently asked questions about car rental in Thailand
1 Question: Is the car insured?
Answer:
Yes. In Thailand, there is a concept of compulsory insurance, which has minimum limits on payments to victims. But they are not used if the vehicle is rented. For rental vehicles, insurance classes 1, 2 and 3 are used. These are extended insurances, they differ in the amount of coverage not only for the car owner, but also for all participants in the accident.
The lower the class, the lower the coverage amount and the worse the conditions. Our company's cars are always insured with maximum coverage, i.e. class 1 insurance.
2. Question: What is commercial insurance and why don't you use it?
Answer:
Commercial insurance is mandatory for international networks. It significantly increases the cost of rent, but does not differ much in terms and amount of payments from class 1 insurance.
3. Question: Is class 1 insurance valid if the driver is not the owner of the car, but the renter?
Answer:
Yes, the insurance contract is issued for the car, not for the driver.
The insurance company doesn't care who is driving, as long as they have a valid driver's license. To drive in Thailand, you need an international driver's license (or a Thai national driver's license).
4. Question: Is it possible to drive with a Russian-style license?
Answer:
No, you can't. If you are stopped by police officers at a checkpoint to check your documents, you will be fined from 500 to 2,000 baht for not having an international driver's license (IDP). However, some companies rent out vehicles without an IDP, thus breaking the law. Also, if you do not have an IDP, In case of an accident, the insurance company refuses to compensate and the person without a license automatically becomes the culprit, all expenses for compensation of expenses fall on him. We do not risk your safety, therefore we do not rent out vehicles without an international driving license.
5. Question: What does the insurance cover?
Answer:
The insurance covers financial and legal liability to third parties in an accident, hospitalization and treatment of all participants in the accident (including the third party).
6. Question: Can I receive the insurance policy in my hands?
Answer:
No, the insurance policy is a contract between the insurance company and the landlord (us). The tenant (you) is not a party to the contract and has no right to contact the insurance company. That is why in the event of an accident, it is imperative to contact the landlord. The landlord himself calls the insurance commissioner and resolves all issues regarding compensation with the insurance company, your presence in resolving these issues is not required.
7. Question: Then how do I understand what I am responsible for?
Answer:
All rental conditions are specified exclusively in the contract between the renter (you) and the landlord (us). Financial liability in case of an accident or other damage to the car is specified in the contract, not in the insurance policy. It is equal to the amount of the deposit, so a certain amount is deducted from it or it is not returned at the end of the lease, depending on the severity of the damage. This condition can be considered as the presence of a mandatory franchise. This so-called franchise forces renters to take good care of our property and drive carefully. It is also compensation to the renter in the event that the car is being repaired due to your fault and cannot be rented out. If you are not at fault in the accident, the amount of the franchise will be collected from the culprit, and your deposit will be returned to you.
8. Question: Can I get a lease agreement in Russian or any other language?
Answer:
No, the legislation of Thailand allows only 2 languages when concluding contracts on the territory of the Kingdom - Thai and English. The use of any other languages is prohibited, such contracts are null and void. If you do not speak English at the required level, you can use the services of an interpreter yourself (including online).
9. Question: What is not covered by insurance?
Answer:
Car insurance in Thailand does not cover damage if the driver was under the influence of alcohol or drugs or if damage to the vehicle occurred due to a breach of the rental agreement concluded with the lessor.
In Thailand, standard insurance for rental cars usually does not cover damage to the interior. This means that if there is damage to the interior (e.g. burnt seats, stains, broken interior elements), the renter will have to pay for the repairs out of their own pocket.
Insurance does not cover damage to wheels, glass and paintwork due to your fault or if the person at fault in the accident escapes.
In case of breach of the lease agreement, the company reserves the right to retain the deposit partially or in full. In case the breach of the contract resulted in damage or loss/destruction of property – the tenant undertakes to cover the damage in full.
10. Question: Is it possible to make changes to your lease?
Answer:
No, in our work we use the recommended standard contract approved by the Government of Thailand represented by the Transport Department. In case of long-term lease (6 months or more), additional clauses can be added to the contract with the consent of both parties.
General information
In Thailand, car rental is accompanied by a number of restrictions. If you violate them, the insurance company may refuse to pay, and the rental company may impose fines.
Here are the main prohibitions:
Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs will void your insurance and result in large fines and/or imprisonment.
Transfer of control to another person - only the driver specified in the contract has the right to drive the car. Transfer of control to another person is permitted by prior agreement with the lessor and not for commercial purposes.
Travel outside Thailand - borders with Laos, Cambodia, Malaysia and Myanmar are closed to rental cars.
The contracts with our company specify an additional restriction on the use of the car - only in Phuket, please do not ignore this provision of the contract. All short-term trips outside the island are discussed with the company manager and recorded in correspondence.
Off-road driving – Most rental cars are not designed for driving on mountains, beaches, jungles and mud roads.
Commercial use – the vehicle may not be used as a taxi, for delivery of goods or for racing.
Leaving your car in the wrong place – improper parking can lead to towing, fines or damage to your car.
Smoking in the cabin - the fine may reach the amount of the deposit.
Covering the number plates or changing the design of the car is a traffic violation, which can lead to fines and problems with the police.
