What currency to take to Thailand in 2024: tips and information on exchange

When going to Thailand, it is important to choose the right currency to make your trip as comfortable and profitable as possible. Therefore, below we will provide the main recommendations.
The main currency in Thailand
The currency used in Thailand is Thai Baht (THB). All prices in the Kingdom of Thailand are quoted in Thai Baht only, and the use of other currencies is prohibited by law.
All payments, whether at the market, in a cafe or for excursions, are made exclusively in baht. Therefore, it is important to think about the conversion in advance.

Currencies that are best to take with you
US Dollars (USD)
- Dollars can be easily exchanged at exchange offices and banks.
- It is best to take new-style banknotes (after 2006).
- Old bills are not accepted in all exchange offices, but there are no serious problems with exchanging them. If you can't change your money in one place, try another exchange office or bank branch.
- All banknotes (both old and new) must be whole and clean. If a banknote has a defect, it can only be exchanged at a bank branch at a reduced rate.
- Large bills ($50 and $100) are exchanged at a more favorable rate than small bills ($1, $5, $10).
Euro (EUR)
- Euros are also exchanged profitably at most exchange offices.
- It is better to take large bills - 500€ - 100€, the exchange rate is higher than 50€-5€
Yuan Yuan (CNY)
- If there are no euros or dollars available in your city, this is a great option.
- The yuan exchange rate is more stable.
Rubles (RUB)
- Cash rubles are not accepted in all exchange offices and the rate may be unfavorable.
- Non-cash rubles can be exchanged in yellow exchange offices, here are their addresses (click on the link to open the exchanger's website) . We recommend that you first contact the exchanger manager via any messenger, he will tell you the procedure.
Where to change currency in Thailand?
We do not recommend changing large amounts at the airport, as the rate there is much worse than in exchange offices and banks on the island.
Regular exchange offices near hotels and markets
- The most popular and affordable option
- Often encountered
- They only exchange cash currency
- The rate at different exchange offices may differ slightly, usually the best rate is in busy places (near markets and major streets)
Banks
- A less profitable option, the rate is usually worse than in exchange offices
- They accept damaged banknotes (the rate may be lower)
- Most branches are closed on weekends and holidays.
- They only exchange cash currency
Exchangers EX24
- Exchange cash and non-cash currencies (for example, online rubles/tenge for cash baht)
- There is Russian-speaking online support
- There are convenient offices in almost all areas of the island.
- Only individuals can exchange non-cash currency (not suitable for individual entrepreneurs, legal entities)

Warning about scammers
Never exchange online currency in Telegram with individuals, or with "exchangers" without offices or a license to work in Thailand. At the moment, the following scheme is popular with scammers (it is called a "triangle") - the client leaves a question in Telegram, to which a recommendation from a stranger comes. He contacts an impersonal Telegram account and is promised a meeting with a courier. He meets with the courier and transfers the money to where they wrote in Telegram. After which it turns out that the courier was also hired through Telegram and he does not know at all who hired him. The correspondence is deleted from both the client and the courier. As a result, there are two victims - the client and the courier, who was not paid and who was actually set up. Contacting the police will not give any result, since the money was not transferred to a Thai account and it is impossible to find the owner of the Telegram account.
There are exchangers in Phuket with offices, licenses and working for a long time. We wrote about them above.
Can I use bank cards?
Credit and debit cards from non-Russian banks, as well as Union Pay from Rosselkhozbank and Asia-Pacific Bank, work. They are accepted in hotels, large stores and restaurants.
You can withdraw cash from these cards at ATMs, but keep in mind:
- ATMs in Thailand charge a fixed fee (220 baht per transaction).
- Withdraw a large amount at once (maximum 20,000 baht at a time) to minimize losses on commission.
- If you need a large sum at once (more than 20,000 baht), you can withdraw from the card from the operator at the bank branch - you need a passport and a card. The name on the card must exactly match the name in the passport.
If your card suddenly stops working or is lost, but you still have access to the application, you can contact EX24 for an online exchange for cash baht.
We hope these tips will help you feel confident and save on currency conversion during your holiday in Thailand.
